Gary Richards, better known as Destructo, is an American music executive, concert promoter, and DJ. He had his start promoting and organizing events in the early 90’s. In 1991 and 1992, he organized the first two “Electric Daisy Carnivals” or EDC, which has since become the largest electronic music festival in North America. With an ear for good music and eye for new talent, he was scouted to handle A&R duties for the Electronic music division at Def American Recordings. He went on to create his own record labels, Nitrous Records and 1500 Records.
By the mid 90s, he began DJing as Destructo. His stage name is derived from his “goal to play the hardest and most gnarly techno out there.” Adding he would “blow up the sound system and the mixer at clubs” if he could. With a diverse taste in music ranging from electronic to rock and heavy metal, his shows had to be explosive. What better way than to live up to the name? As a DJ, he has performed around the world for more than 20 years and shared the stage with some of the hottest names in EDM.
Returning to his roots as a concert promoter, he became the sole founder and CEO of HARD Events in 2007. HARD, nicknamed “Hardfest” by fans, is a collective of national music festivals, music cruises, and concert brand. On December 31, 2007, the first music festival took place in Downtown L.A., and they’ve been going “HARD” ever since.
HARD Events include, but are not limited to: HARD Summer, HARD Day of the Dead, HOLY SHIP!, HARD Red Rocks, HARD Miami, HARD NYC, HARD 13, HARD Haunted Mansion, HARD SF, and HARD Arena Australia.
Since being acquired by Live Nation Entertainment in 2012, it has become synonymous with larger-than-life performances, educated party people, stunning productions, and showcased some of the brightest rising stars in the music industry.
